The Transport of London trial that allowed motorcyclists to use the bus lanes has now ended, but the practice will remain in place. The test showed that allowing the motorbikes access to the bus lanes greatly reduced commuter travel and congestion without adverse affect to the bus lines.
One detriment is that there seems to have been an increase in motorcycle accidents in relation to the use of the bus lanes. For this reason, there will be a new code of conduct issued for those wearing motorcycle clothes and riding in bus lanes. There will also be a call for other drivers to increase awareness of the motorbike presence in the bus lanes.
MCI (Motorcycle Industry Association) said it is happy to work with Transport of London to increase motorcycle safety and address issues relating to motorbike traffic in the city. The city is happy with the success of the programme.
