Brian Paddick is a contender for the Mayor of London from the Liberal Democrat party, and he has recently announced that if he were elected he would create a special loan scheme that would allow taxi drivers to purchase zero emission vehicles.
It has recently been discovered that Boris Johnson has failed to make any progress with the fund that he set up for cleaning up taxis in the city. In a recent interview Mr Paddick set out several policies that he would use to encourage green transportation in London if he were elected. On top of the taxi scheme, he also announced that he would be converting all of the buses in London to electric ones, as this would help create a low emission zone in the centre of the city.
The subsidy scheme for taxi drivers would mean that the upfront cost of purchasing an environmentally friendly taxi would be significantly reduced. He did state in the interview that the final details have not yet been sorted out, but it is likely that it would be based on the Green Deal loan scheme that has recently been proposed by the government. He stated that electric vehicles provide a long-term solution to emission problems in the capital city.
