Klaus Bischoff, Volkswagen head of design, unveiled today the latest of the company’s “World Taxis” concept cab. Volkswagen’s new electric Taxi Concept aims to face up to the stringent space and carbon emission restrictions imposed by urban motoring laws and guidelines.
Based on the “UP!” city car platform, the new taxi is powered by 112bhp generated by its 45KW/H lithium-Ion batteries, which gives it a nominal top speed of 75mph and 186 miles range.
Dimension wise, the car is a little shorter in length than VW is Fox and has an estimated range of 186miles. The Concept Taxi can accommodate two fares plus luggage, owing to its front and rear over hangs and its long wheelbase.
The storage area is located in what is conventionally the front passenger seat area beside the driver. This leaves a spacious area at the back for two passengers sitting comfortably.
The Concept Taxi, however, is more of a prototype than a serious contender to replace the iconic black cab. Currently the vehicle does not meet the legal requirements that regulate taxis in London.
